Last night I watched the most inspiring and fascinating documentary on Lella and Massimo Vignelli titled Design is One. Watch the trailer here. I am embarrassed to admit after all of my years in design that I had not known of them sooner. But after seeing all of their iconic work in the documentary, I realized how long I had been familiar with their designs.
I loved hearing Massimo, in particular discuss his approach and theories on design. He is a very articulate and charming man in the film and left me feeling very inspired. Sadly, he passed away earlier this year. Although they worked together as a couple and a team for over fifty years, Lella is known for many of her own exquisite designs including jewelry and commercial interiors. Lella is so chic and beautiful too!
I also loved their clothes. Like their product design, everything is reduced to its most essential while remaining elegant at the same time. The Vignelli’s prolific work captures the essence of the most famous quote by architect Mies van der Rohe, “Less is More”.
Enjoy the film!

Another extraordinary silver necklace designed by Lella Vignelli. Inspired by the ruff collars of the 16th and 17th centuries.

Admittedly, I prefer the new graphics for American Airlines but the Vignelli design had a very long run for sure
